Bros Before Hos

Bros before hos a common expression I remember first hearing in high school; and in high school it should remain. Of course we girls had a saying of our own, “Men come and go but friends are forever.” But at some time, men and women alike reach an age where we know these silly little sayings are nothing more than another way to irritate each other.

Don’t get me wrong, a woman should never come between you and your friends, but if you meet a girl and think she may be the one, the whole “bros before hos” mentality will cease to exist. At least it should anyway. Of course if you’re with a girl who your friends think is a complete disaster and totally wrong for you, they may be onto something.

However, if you know this girl is the one, you have taken her home to mom, and your friends think she is pretty cool, it’s no longer bros before hos. There’s no more going out with the guys before taking her to a nice dinner, no more card nights before a quiet evening alone with her. It’s time to start finding things the both of you like and doing those things together. Also, it’s best for the both of you to start hanging out with other couples. Not that you have to be best friends, but just other couples that you can go to dinner with or out to see a movie.

Ditching this whole mentality is not to say that you shouldn’t still have “me time.” You can still play your video games and go out with the guys; but you have to learn how to allocate your time between the things you did as a single male and the things you need to do to keep your girl.

So what if you’ve got one of those friends that insists that you’re “whipped” and can’t stand the thought of you growing up and being with any woman? You know the guy; the one who still lives in his mom’s basement, hasn’t had a date in years, and still uses the term “bros before hos.” As we get older we all change, as do our friendships. We mature; either our friends mature and change with us or it is time to go our separate ways. After all, you don’t want to be the creepy forty year old guy in the club do you?
